Topography:Ralls is
located on the High Plains portion of Crosby County. This portion of the
country typifies the general relief of this land area, consisting of nearly
level to gently undulating plains with scattered playa lakes. These playa lakes
are depressions that gather the runoff water from the rainfall.
Pedology:
The wind erosion susceptibility of the solid in the Ralls area is moderate.
There are deep, nearly level to gently sloping loamy upland soils with loamy to
clayey soil in the playas. Permeability is moderate to slow. The soils in the
Ralls area of Crosby County are primarily of the Pullman series and also the
Randle, Olton, Lofton, Drake and Zita series.
Hydrology: The High
Plains area that Ralls occupies has hydrographic problems. Scanty rainfall here
is part of the problem. As mentioned in the geology of this area, the beds of
sand and gravel deposits saturated with water are the only natural source of
water and soil saturation is moderate to slow. Rainfall and melting snow run
into the various scattered playas, but the Randall soils in these playas are
clayed, and therefore have very slow drainage. Standing water in these playas
is quickly evaporated. Irrigation is necessary for successful crops.
Climate: Ralls has a
sub-humid climate. This city lies in an area that is transitional between the
more desert like region of eastern New Mexico and the more humid region of
central and east Texas.
Rains
occur most frequently in thunderstorms and the amounts of monthly and annual
rainfall vary greatly. The Maximum rainfall is generally during May, June and
July when warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico is carried inland. This air
mass causes moderate to heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Snow
falls occasionally during the winter months, but is generally light and remains
on the ground only a short time. The mean monthly snowfall data are influenced
by rare, but exceptionally heavy snows.
Temperatures, like rainfall vary greatly, especially during the colder six
months of the year. Cold spells are rather short, and rarely last more than 48
hours before winds from the west and southwest bring rapid warming. Ralls
winters are mild and surprisingly warm. Summer days are hot, with low humidity
making it seem cooler due to light breezes and circulating winds. Most summer
nights are pleasantly cool.
